How to Calculate How Much Sod You Need

Sod gives you an instant lawn in days rather than months. Calculating the right amount is simple โ€” measure your area, add 5% for waste, then divide by your pallet coverage.

The Sod Formula

Pallets = (Area ร— 1.05) รท Pallet Coverage

Example: 1,500 sq ft at 450 sq ft per pallet:
1,500 ร— 1.05 = 1,575 รท 450 = 3.5 โ†’ order 4 pallets

Before You Lay Sod

Prepare the area thoroughly: remove all existing grass and weeds, till the soil 4โ€“6 inches, apply 4โ€“6 inches of quality topsoil (see our Topsoil Calculator), then add starter fertilizer. Level and rake smooth before sod arrives.

Popular Grass Types

  • Bermuda: Warm climates, drought-tolerant, handles traffic
  • Zoysia: Dense, handles shade, slow-growing
  • Kentucky Bluegrass: Cool climates, rich blue-green color
  • St. Augustine: Humid coastal areas, shade-tolerant
  • Tall Fescue: Cool-transitional zones, low maintenance

๐ŸŒŠ Water Immediately

Water sod within 30 minutes of installation. Keep it wet for the first 2 weeks โ€” water daily. Taper to 2โ€“3ร—/week as roots establish in weeks 3โ€“4.

๐Ÿ“… Order Day-of

Order sod for same-day delivery and install it the day it arrives. Sod deteriorates rapidly in heat โ€” install within 24 hours maximum.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most pallets of sod cover 450 square feet, though this ranges from 400โ€“504 sq ft by supplier and grass type. Always confirm coverage with your local sod farm or landscape supplier when ordering.
Sod establishes surface roots in 10โ€“14 days. Full deep rooting takes 4โ€“6 weeks. Wait until you can't easily lift a corner before mowing or allowing heavy foot traffic.
Yes โ€” apply 4โ€“6 inches of quality screened topsoil before laying sod. This gives roots loose, nutrient-rich soil to grow into. Prepare and level the soil thoroughly before sod arrives.
Sod gives instant results โ€” you have a usable lawn in 3โ€“4 weeks. Seed is 50โ€“70% cheaper but takes 3โ€“6 months and has higher failure risk. For visible front yards, large areas that need quick establishment, or sloped erosion-prone areas: choose sod.
